The good that people do is worth mention

Published: Monday, July 28, 2008 5:45 PM CDT
It seems that news is always defined as something bad that happens. It's important to inform people when something is not right. But it is equally important to let them know when good things happen.

We were thinking about that recently as we read the adventures of Gulliver the blue and gold macaw and the efforts of Sybil Erden and The Oasis exotic bird sanctuary in Cascabel to rescue him.

Gulliver is a young macaw, born in the States. He went on a boat trip with his humans, but when their craft, the Darla Jean, was shipwrecked in December 2007 on a South Pacific Island, the humans were rescued and Gulliver was abandoned along with a puppy. The puppy was later rescued by the Hawaiian Human Society, but Gulliver remained trapped.

But not while Sybil Erden draws breath. The Oasis houses hundreds of abandoned and abused birds. People fail to realize how much time an intelligent animal like a parrot will take or that it will probably outlive its human companions. The lucky birds end up at The Oasis.

Erden is near the end of an eight-month odyssey of wrangling bureaucrats and raising money to make sure that Gulliver spends the rest of his (very long) life with those who will care for him. This was all made more difficult because Gulliver's humans took him aboard their boat without the proper paperwork.

Despite all the problems, it looks as if Gulliver will eventually make it to Cascabel. Erden has raised thousands of dollars to make it happen.

While Gulliver's travels are notable, Erden is not the only one who spends her time and money making sure that creatures unable to speak for themselves have an advocate. Outside of Benson there is the Forever Home donkey rescue. Casa de los Gatos and the Hermitage Cat Shelter make sure Tucson's kitties are cared for in a no-kill environment. Equine Voices south of Tucson rescues PMU mares and their foals. And there are many, many more.

Each of these organizations is always looking for volunteers and donations. What a great way to make our communities better places. The next time you realize you have a few hours every month to donate to a good cause. Think about all the animal rescue organizations. And if you don't have time, in these difficult economic moments, each of these organizations has more need than ever for donations.

Just a small amount makes a big difference to one of God's creatures.
