The Vets for Freedom endorsed Sen. Tim Bee last week for the 8th Congressional District in Arizona. Bee, a Republican, is running against Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Vets for Freedom is a nonpartisan organization established by combat veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The mission of the organization is to educate the American public about the importance of achieving success in the ongoing conflicts by applying first-hand knowledge to issues of military strategy.

"As a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I am honored to speak on behalf of over 27,000 members of Vets for Freedom in offering our strong endorsement of Tim Bee for the United States Congress," said Joel Arends, the executive director.

"Senator Bee understands that the fight we are currently undertaking in Iraq is essential to our success in the global fight against Islamic extremism. He recognizes and acknowledges the success of our current military strategy implemented by General Petraeus, and has been a steadfast source of support of all the men and women who are winning the global war on terror. Our country needs more dedicated people like Tim in Washington."

Mike Holmes, a two-year Vail resident, is a member of the Veterans' organization and said he supports the endorsement of Bee.

"I support Senator Bee strongly," said Holmes, who serving in the Army National Guard for 23 years. "I support him for two reasons. First, I don't support Giffords' policies and particularly her stance on the war. Second, I think Senator Bee has proven leadership and is capable of working on both sides to do what's best. He is just getting the job done."

The race between Giffords and Bee has become heated in the past months, and analysts believe it will be one of the nation's most watched, as Democrats try to maintain control of the House and Senate.

While Giffords voted against the Iraq war, the first-term incumbent said she is in favor of supporting veterans and the military's current enlistments.
